Star Stories of the Summer Sky Cruise with Drummond Island Tall Ship Co

July 16, 2018 @ 3:00 pm - July 18, 2018 @ 11:00 am

$625

On July evenings, the thickest part of the Milky Way arcs overhead to the west, and on this two-night cruise, we’ll wait for it to emerge in the company of the Crescent Moon, where it leads the way to our brilliant evening star, Venus. Star stories are best under Crescent Moon, because at crescent phase, the Moon is not bright enough to diminish the starshine, and with the ancient goddess of love and beauty on the scene, the drama of the night is amplified. Also in July this year, the red warrior planet Mars, beloved of Venus, is coming closer to the Earth than ever, crossing from east to west through the night sky, with the giants Jupiter and Saturn in tow. Guests on the Star Stories cruise will have opportunities to engage by day with star maps and ancient star knowledge, in preparation for entertaining guidance into the night when the Sun goes down.

The star stories and night sky guidance will be provided by Mary Stewart Adams, star lore historian and founder of Michigan’s only International Dark Sky Park. A celebrated and award-winning speaker, Mary travels extensively advocating for dark skies and teaching a humanities-based approach to understanding the celestial world around us. From her home in Northern Michigan, Mary hosts the weekly public radio program “The Storyteller’s Night Sky” on IPR, where you can access over five years of star story archives.
